[SABUDA, Robert]. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. [by L. Frank Baum. Illustrated with paper-engineering by Robert Sabuda]. [NY: Books of Wonder / Simon & Schuster, 2000]. 8vo, [10]pp. Green cloth with spine stamped in gold and pictorial pop-up label affixed to the box, housed in a green cloth slipcase with signed and numbered print cleverly encased in a holder inlaid on the front. A fine copy in original slipcase and box (bearing a paper label with the matching limitation number). Signed and numbered by the artist, Robert Sabuda, on the limitation pop-up on the front cover of the book and the print lid into a folding presentation holder inlaid on the front of the slipcase.
First edition, deluxe issue being #2 of 50 copies with the extra pop-up and signed print. Sabuda’s fascinating edition of Baum’s classic tale was released in two different limited-edition formats upon its release. One edition was limited to 250 copies and only featured the additional signed and numbered pop-up on the book itself. This edition of 50 copies, created by Simon & Schuster exclusively for Books of Wonder to offer to their many Oz collectors, featured an additional signed print created especially by Sabuda for this edition. A stunningly fine, bright – truly “as new” – copy of this rare Oz pop-up book!
