Dark blue cloth pictorially stamped in gilt, red and brown. 18 b&w plates and numerous smaller b&w illustrations. Hinges roughly mended, spine ends worn with some clean tears, corners worn, some very light internal foxing, pages aged, upper corner of page 397/8 creased. Nevertheless, a clean, bright copy.
First edition, first state. A charming story of a family who is rescued from poverty due to the interest of a wealthy benefactor. The first of a total of 12 books that Margaret Sidney (the pseudonym of Harriet Mulford Stone Lothrop, the wife of publisher Daniel Lothrop) would go on to write about these characters. PPP p. 54.
