These reads are just the thing to kick off the new season! Silence Sounds Simple: A Day in the Life of John Cage written by GARY GOLIO and illustrated by ANDREA D’AQUINO

John Cage is a man who makes music with screws and bolts or with rubber bands. He’ll play a toy piano onstage in his suit. Why? To make people listen. To make them think.

As John goes through an ordinary day, he finds that it’s full of wonder and full of music. John hears the seeds of music in everything from slippers scuffing on an old wooden floor and water whooshing from a faucet to beeping horns and screeching brakes outside. He even hears music in the silence of the forest as he harvests mushrooms.

On the island of Nantucket lives the greatest whaling captain of all time. Call him Ahab. He has long searched for the great white whale known as Moby Dick. Whenever Ahab heard any news of the whale, he rushed off to sea in his ship the Pequod. He climbed mountains, scaled sunken wrecks, crossed oceans without any luck. He wasted whole days shut up in his cabin. He traveled to the ends of the earth, but still the whale was not to be found. Ahab spent so much time on the hunt that he even forgot what he was looking for! The sea is a mystery, that much he can say for sure.

When Paulie's boat from Italy finally reaches the coast of New York City, all of the special sounds of America come rushing into his ears!

On his way to his papà and nonno's restaurant, Paulie's ears continue to fill with the joyful noise of the city and its people. As Paulie makes friends and finds his place in his new home, the sounds around him grow richer-each one telling a story of family, community, perseverance, and freedom.
