The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Salesman's Proof
Author: L. Frank Baum
Illustrator: Robert Sabuda
SABUDA, Robert. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. [A Commemorative Pop-up by L. Frank Baum, art by Robert Sabuda]. [NY: Little Simon, 2000]. 8vo, pp with large, full-color pop-ups on each spread and fold-out flaps on each page, each flap containing numerous smaller pop-ups which are revealed as the flaps are unfolded. Color pictorial boards. A near fine copy without dust jacket as issued (note: as this is a Salesman’s pre-publication sample, it requires extra care as some of the pop-ups do not refold as easily as they would on the final, published version). Signed by the artist, Robert Sabuda. Rare
Salesman’s proof, being issued prior to the publication for buyer’s consideration and featuring a green spine trial binding which was changed to a purple spine in the first edition and a blank white field on the rear cover where the barcode and ISBN would appear on the published edition. Only a handful of these proofs were assembled by hand for use by the publisher. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publication of L. Frank Baum’s beloved tale, Robert Sabuda created this lavish, masterfully crafted book highlighting in majestic pop-up illustrations the magic and wonder of the land of Oz. Of note is Sabuda’s insistence on using L. Frank Baum’s own original text, carefully abridged but with no changes to Baum’s story. This is the first pop-up adaptation by Sabuda of a classic novel and is the first use by him of the multiple flaps format that he would go on to use for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Peter Pan.
