Author: J.R.R. Tolkien
TOLKIEN, J[ohn] R[onald] R[euel]. The Return of the King. Being the Third Part of The Lord of the Rings. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1956. 8vo, 416pp. Blue cloth stamped in gold. Two-color fold-out map affixed to rear fixed endpaper. Spine ends and front corners slightly rubbed, else an internally clean, tight copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (roughly triangular chip measuring 7/8” tall by 1½” wide at base of spine, tiny chip on either side of head of spine, 1¼” closed under the words “The Return” on spine panel, rear panel very lightly foxed – nonetheless, an attractive jacket).
First American edition, first printing, being one of just 1,500 copies printed with the publication year on the title page and “Printed in Great Britain” on the copyright page. The third book in Tolkien’s epic fantasy series that has fascinated and beguiled readers for nearly 70 years! The conclusion to Frodo’s long journey across Middle earth as he seeks to destroy the ring and free the realm from Sauron’s evil. A wonderful addition to any Tolkien collection.
