NESBIT, E[dith]. The Railway Children. With Drawings by C.E. Brock. NY: The Macmillan Company [1913]. 12mo, x 209pp + [14] advts. 20 full-page b&w illustrations. Binding heavily rubbed, spine ends and corners worn, stamping nearly all rubbed-off. Nonetheless, an internally clean, tight copy.
3rd printing of the first US edition. Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis find their lives suddenly changed when their father is taken (unjustly) to prison and they must move from London to a small country cottage near a railway. How they adjust to their new life, help prevent a railway accident, and prove their father’s innocence makes an exciting and tender story. Perhaps Nesbit’s best known work, it has been adapted for both film, stage, and television.
