STREATFIELD, Noel. Osbert. Illustrated by Susanne Suba. [NY]: Rand McNally [1950]. 8vo, 32pp. Color pictorial boards. Alternating b&w and color illustration on every other spread. Die-cut cardboard sheet Osbert toy and mirror still intact and unused (light damp-stain at fore-edge, die-cuts unaffected). Spine ends and corners a bit rubbed, some gaint ink transference from the cardboard sheet to the last page and rear fixed endsheet, else a bright, clean copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (evidence of faint damp-stain at top of front panel and along rear fold, spine ends and corners a tad worn, a few small tears and chips at edges). Inscribed with a drawing of a dog by the artist, Susanne Suba.
First edition (“first printing” stated on copyright page). A wonderfully inscribed copy of this charming picture book from the author of Ballet Shoes, with all of the pop-out pieces still present. Watch as Peter, Ann, Jane, and Andrew get their awkward, homely dog into presentable condition for their aunt’s upcoming wedding. The charming inscription reads, “To Helen, A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, with love from Susanne and Suzy.” Apparently “Suzy” is the name of the artist’s dog, who she has drawn a picture of below her signature.
