Old & Rare
SEUSS, Dr. McElligot’s Pool. NY: Random House [1947]. 4to, [56]pp. Medium blue-green boards pictorially stamped in black. Color pictorial endpapers; illustrated on alternating spreads in full-color and b&w. Spine ends, lower edge and corners quite rubbed, top edge lightly so, else a clean, tight copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (a bit worn at folds and edges, small chips at spine ends, ¾” closed tear at top of front panel, lightly soiled).
First edition, state D, retaining the jacket price of $2.50, and having medium blue-green boards, a 1½” publisher name printed on the spine, and a four-line copyright notice. Recently pulled from publication by the Suess Estate due to a racially insensitive spread, this was Dr. Seuss’ first book published after World War II, his fifth published book, and the first to have been illustrated with full-color drawings. Filled with wonderful, fantastical specimen from imaginary lands, you never can tell what you’ll find when you go fishing at McElligot’s Pool!
