Mixed media artwork on board created for the 1969 Washington Square Press paperback edition of Homer's epic The Iliad. The image measures 9.5" x 18" and was done on paper laid on a 23.5" x 15.5" board. The piece is signed in the lower left corner.
This piece is a great representation of the fantastic cover style employed by the Dillons in the late 60s and early 70s, which resulted in their numerous commissions for science fiction and fantasy covers as well as their award winning work in children’s books. Leo & Diane Dillon received the Hugo Award for Profession Artist in 1971, are the only artists to win the coveted Caldecott Medal two years in a row (1976 and 1977), and were runners up for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1978.
This piece can be purchased as a set with the Dillon's cover of The Odyssey for the discounted set price of $12,000 -- just give us a call or send us an email to rarebooks@booksofwonder.com if you are interested in purchasing both. You can view the Dillon's original cover artwork for The Odyssey here.
