First edition. Wonderfully illustrated throughout by the incomparable Edward Gorey, this is rhe first of twelve novels in Bellair’s Lewis Barnavelt series, as well as the basis for the 2018 film. When newly orphaned Lewis Barnavelt comes to stay with his uncle Jonathan, he is thrilled to discover that his uncle and their next-door neighbor, Mrs. Zimmermann, are both magicians! But then Lewis experiments with magic himself and unknowingly resurrects the former owner of the house, setting off a race to stop the clock built into the old house’s walls before it obliterates all of mankind! A must for any Bellairs or Gorey collector!
