BEMELMANS, Ludwig. Hansi. NY: The Viking Press, 1934. 4to, [64]pp. Light blue cloth spine with color pictorial boards. Color pictorial endpapers; color and b&w illustrations on alternating spreads. Binding heavily worn at spine and edges, a few spots of foxing on rear cover, faint line across center of front board, rear hinge roughly mended, bottom inch of front hinge starting, pages toned, else an internally clean, tight copy. Inscribed by the author/artist Caldecott Medalist Ludwig Bemelmans to Dorothy Kunhardt, the author and illustrator of “Pat the Bunny,” and dated Nov. 15 ‘34.

First edition.  A lovely association copy of the Caldecott Medal winning-author’s first book, inscribed to the author of the beloved and groundbreaking touch-and-feel book, Pat the Bunny which would be published six years after the inscription in this book was written. Bemelman’s inscribed the book on the front free endpaper. At the top of that page is hand-written “Philip Kunhardt / November 15, 1934.” Most likely, this was her son, though her husband was also named Philip. Published five years before the release of Madeline, this humorous introduction to Swiss/Austrian cultural traditions is based on Bemelmans’ childhood working as an apprentice to his uncle at a hotel in Austria. A remarkable association between two creators of timeless children’s books from the 1930s.
