[SENDAK, Maurice]. The Giant Story. By Beatrice Schenk de Regniers. Pictures by Maurice Sendak. [NY]: Harper & Brothers [1953]. 8vo, [32]pp. Light blue cloth with front pictorially stamped in brick-red. Two-color illustrations on every page. Corners and spine ends a bit worn, covers lightly spotted from mildew, evidence of damp-staining on rear board, endpapers discolored with age, else an internally clean, tight copy in original pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped, light edgewear, soiling and foxing across, two small puncture holes near spine, evidence of paper loss due to sticker or tape removal from two spots on front panel).

Probable first edition (it likely only had one printing). In this early picture book from beloved artist Maurice Sendak, we follow a young boy who one day decides to be a Giant. Illustrated in a unique style that Sendak would not return to, the striking pictures in this book are done in alternating black and blue and black and goldenrod spreads. A collectible copy of this scarce Sendak book, which the artist once described to us as “my mistaken attempt at modernism.” We think he was rather harsh on himself!
