Because of Winn-Dixie
Author: Kate DiCamillo
The classic heartwarming tale from Kate DiCamillo—newly released with an afterword from the beloved author, reflecting on twenty years in print
This is the story of ten-year-old India Opal Buloni who, upon moving to Naomi, Florida, unexpectedly adopts a dog. She names him Winn-Dixie based on the supermarket in her town. In Winn-Dixie, Opal knows she has found her soul mate. She can confine in him her inner most thoughts and feelings, like how upset she still is about her mother leaving her family when Opal was only three-years-old. Also, she confides in Winn-Dixie that her father, a Preacher, will not talk at all about her mother any more, a silence that leaves deep, unhealed wounds. Lastly, she confides in Winn-Dixie her inherent, crippling loneliness. Nevertheless, it seems with the help of Winn-Dixie, Opal’s life begins to rapidly make a turn for the better as the two begin meeting rather unusual friends, left and right. It’s all “because of Winn-Dixie.”
Your young readers and lovers of dogs and all friends will be inspired by this remarkable Newbery Honor book
