"The sea, the sea, the sea.
It rolled and rolled and called to me.
Come in, it said, come in."
13-year-old Sophie is on a sailboat bound for England, with an unlikely crew of her three surly uncles and two bothersome cousins, Cody and Brian. Sophie is all seriousness — anxious to get going, ready to face the ocean blue and see her Grandpa Bompie on the other side of the Atlantic. Cody is the goofball, and everyone, especially his father, is constantly after him to be just a little more serious.
When the Wanderer finds itself in the middle of a raging Atlantic storm, the crew is forced to leave their family bickering aside and band together to get through the ocean's torrent and safely to the shores of England, where the reward of the physical and emotional battles they waged at sea await them. Cody isn't sure he has the strength to prove himself to the crew and his father, but what Sophie learns about her own past impacts her more deeply than the even ocean that threatens to engulf the ship.
Told through Sophie's and Cody's travel logs, they share their stories of the past and the daily challenges of surviving at sea as The Wanderer sails toward its destination — and its passengers search for their places in the world. Ages 10 and up. 280pp.
