Spine a tad cocked, spine ends lightly rubbed, rest of edges less so, small faint erasure mark on front free endpaper, slight evidence of hand-soiling in margins, else a clean, bright copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (a few chips and closed tears, light creasing around edges, slight soiling to rear).
First edition, first state being printed by the Jersey City Printing Co, and in a second state dust jacket, mentioning “a desolate Minnesota village”. 1929 Newbery Honor Book! Ga’g’s first and most beloved book also saw her win the first of two Newbery Honors which along with her two Caldecott Honors were highlights of her illustrious career. The oldest American picture book to have never been out of print, Ga’g’s enchanting tale of a lonely old couple looking to find the perfect cat is truly timeless.
