Old & Rare
Illustrator: Arthur Rackham
[RACKHAM, Arthur]. The Land of Enchantment. London: Cassell and Company, 1907. 4to, 144pp. Olive cloth pictorially stamped in gilt. Tinted frontispiece plus 12 full-page and numerous smaller b&w illustrations all printed on yellow backgrounds. Spine ends worn, corners rubbed, edges lightly so, spine sunned, boards slightly warped, else an internally clean, tight copy.
First edition in the first state binding, having the cover title and illustration stamped in gold. Five stories all illustrated by Rackham that had previously appeared in the “Little Folks” magazine between 1896 and 1902. These wonderful fantasy tales from the turn of the 20th century serve as perfect vehicles for Rackham’s detailed, fanciful line work. Though both Rackham bibliographies refer to the frontispiece as tinted, to us it appears to have been printed in three colors, having a light blue and light tan in addition to the black line work.
