Edges a bit worn, spine ends a tad rubbed, boards and endpapers a bit aged, previous owner’s name in upper margine of title, else an internally clean, surprisingly bright copy. Rare!

First and only edition. The first of the beloved and influential annual Swedish collection of fairy tales, titled ”Among Gnomes and Trolls” in English, and one of only 8 editions illustrated entirely by John Bauer before his untimely death in a ferry accident in 1918. A landmark in golden age fantasy illustration. This marks the first appearance of these illustrations by Bauer, which though painted in full color, were reproduced in halftone and two colors due to the technical limitations of the time (some having been reproduced in full color in later editions alongside the Einer Norelius illustrations).
