Here is the epic story of the Elvish hidden city of Gondolin. Turgon King of Gondolin is hated and feared by Morgoth above all his enemies. For years Morgoth seeks in vain to discover the marvelously hidden city. Into this world comes the man Tuor, cousin of Túrin. Guided unseen by Ulmo, one of the angelic Valar, Tuor sets out from the land of his birth on the fearful journey to Gondolin. There Tuor achieves greatness, weds Idril, Turgon’s daughter, and from their union comes Eärendil, whose birth and profound importance in days to come is foreseen by Ulmo. Then, through an act of supreme treachery, Morgoth finally learns where the city lies and mounts a devastating attack on the city with Balrogs and dragons and numberless Orcs. But despite the tragic fall of Gondolin, Túor and Idril escape with their child Eärendil, who will be the father of Elrond and Elros and eventually convince the Valar to finally rise up and banish Morgoth from Middle-earth. Featuring 8 color plates and numerous pencil drawings by famed Tolkien and fantasy artist, Alan Lee, as well as a fold-out two-page, two-color map of Beleriand and two pages of genealogies.
