It’s Christmas Eve, 1938 —  the last night of Hannukah — and young Oskar has just arrived in New York City. The city is so big, so busy, and nothing like Oskar’s home in Poland. He is all alone and it is 100 blocks to where his aunt lives.

It’s a long walk and Oskar is scared and cold, tired and hungry. He doesn’t know how he’ll make it the entire way. But then he encounters a woman who offers him a small loaf of bread. And then later on a man hands him a comic book.

As Oskar makes his walk through the city, he encounters eight blessings -- eight strangers reaching out and giving him small kindesses as he draws closer to his aunt’s home. Maybe there’s hope in this new city. Maybe even a place Oskar can call home.
