Nesbit's first great success, this book established her as one of the
leading children's authors of her (or any!)
day. Although the adventures in this
exciting and humorous tale do not involve the magic and fantasy for which she
became famous, it does introduce her incredible talent for creating very
real children and their ways of interacting with their fellow family
members. To read an E. Nesbit children's
book is to truly sample the childhood of Edwardian England's middle class.
